What was the inspiration behind the book?

While preparing for my children's first military move, I searched in vain for a quality picture book to explain to them their unique role as military brats. When I couldn't find what I was looking for, I was inspired to think about writing my own book. Around the same time, my then-three year old daughter heard the phrase "military brat," and said, "but Mommy, I'm not a rat!" And so the idea of a military rat was born. 

Why did you decide to self-publish?

I tried to get traditional publishers to pick up my book idea, but they didn't seem interested, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I am so glad I did, because I was able to have full creative control over the illustrations and production of the book. Plus, I had it printed in the USA, which is pretty rare in traditional publishing these days.

Will there be any more Maggie the Military Rat books?

Yes! As a matter of fact, I am currently working on a sequel. 

What advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Don't give up! I truly believe if you don't give up on your dream, you WILL achieve it. I'm rooting for you! Also: join SCBWI and get an editor!
